At Kitebrook, our youngest learners, aged three to six years, embark on their educational journey in ‘The Cottage’, which encompasses both Pre-School and Reception classes before they progress to Year 1 and Year 2. Our curriculum is designed to foster a love of learning through engaging and developmentally appropriate experiences.
Pre-School and Reception
In our Pre-School, we focus on creating a nurturing environment where children can explore and discover through child-led play. Our curriculum emphasises foundational skills in phonics and numeracy, helping to prepare them for their next steps in education. We have two Pre-School classes; Acorns and Chestnuts, consisting of a maximum of 15 children per class. Each class is supported by a teacher and teaching assistant.
As children transition into Reception, they engage in daily phonics and numeracy lessons following the Essential Letters and Sounds scheme. Children in both year groups also benefit from our specialist teachers who introduce them to sport, music, performing arts, and outdoor education. There are three Reception classes; Badgers, Hedgehogs and Squirrels, each comprising 12-15 children. Each class is supported by a teacher and teaching assistant.
Year 1 and Year 2
The transition into Year 1 brings a more structured school experience, with greater expectations for academic engagement. Weekly spelling tests and small prep (homework) activities help develop responsibility and reinforce learning at home.
In addition to core subjects, Year 1 and 2 pupils benefit from an increased range of specialist subjects, including the introduction of languages, spirituality and coding. This diverse curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity and equip children with essential skills for their future learning.
In Year 1 and Year 2 there are three classes per year, each comprising 12-15 children. Each class is supported by both a teacher and a teaching assistant.
